7 Reasons Why Reading Is Fun And Makes You Happy?

Reading is fun. Well, before you get your eyes rolling on that one, it is a matter of personal preferences. Nevertheless, there is no denying the fact that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. And similarly, the practice of reading has been known to induce a sense of ‘happiness’ in the readers. Sounds strange? Well, it is true nonetheless. Being a vivid reader myself, it is clear that reading is addictive. There are innumerable books out there that are simply meant to be devoured. There are people who spend entire nights up to complete a certain thrilling book. Also, others cannot go to bed without reading a couple of lines.

Most relate books to being nerds or geeks. But, never notice that it can be fun and cool. So why reading is fun? Well, allow us to bring to you some of the most amazing reasons for books to be your source of joy:

Reading is Fun

Reading allows you to trial off to the lands, scenes, places, and times that the author has scripted. But, you get to go there as well and enjoy all the wonders it has to allow. Imagination is your vehicle, and your ticket is free. All you need to do is hop onto the wagon (the book), and off you go. These lands can be as fantastical as that of Harry Potter or as real as those spoken about by Malala in her Biography. So, you see, you get to be a part of the author’s imagination, without the hard work, though. Isn’t that fun?

2.You Get to Learn

Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’ was an incredible story about a little girl with magical powers. While I will keep the story a mystery for you to enjoy yourself, nevertheless, it includes Matilda’ teaching herself’ to learn from the public. While Dahl’s storey was fiction, nevertheless, it sure inspired many young children to indulge in reading at an early age. By learning, we are not implying acquiring a PhD in a particular subject. But a basic understanding of a certain topic. This could be economics, Politics, Birds, the Medieval times, knowledge about rulers of the past, or Kingdoms from History. It enhances your mind and improves your knowledge.

3. It is an Inspiration

Why does reading make you happy? Well, inspiration is always an elevating feeling. Books are one of the strongest mediums that state, ‘you can be anything. A book can inspire you to be stronger, happier, or simply a great cook! I remember reading Enid Blyton’s ‘Famous Five’ as a child and had known every English food item and ingredient by heart! As Blyton ensured a good portion of her children’s novels covered what they ate, it inspired my taste palate, and I wanted to cook them up too! Despite being an Indian, today, cooking various cuisines inspires me because they are not alien to me. Likewise, a book can inspire you to develop a profession, a craft, or simply be like a person you have been reading about.

4. Entertainment: Unlimited

Now this one does not require any argument. A book can be as cheap as possible, as expensive as a treasure, or free when borrowed. But, it sure does promise you a world of entertainment. You could be one of the pals from the ‘Archie comics’ and re-live your college days over and over again, or you could climb into the mind of Hitler in his Mein Kempf to get a glimpse of his thoughts! Well, what’s more? You could travel the world in ‘Eighty days’ and also get a breathtaking view of ‘Aagraba’ from Aladin’s magic carpet. So, you see, it is entertainment promised to the ‘T’ why I remember ‘Jackie Collins’ to be my guilty pleasure whenever I needed a mood uplift! And it worked like a charm on me. Well, it’s time you found yours.

5. Smart-Talk

Wish to be the smartest in the class or group? Well, be a regular reader. Books are the best of ice-breakers, and one can never go short of topics to talk about if you read enough. Regular readers are usually the best conversationalists, contrary to the fact that bookworms are geeky and awkward to be around. There might be exceptions, but a book sure does offer you a great deal to share with those around you. Imagine being surrounded by children. What would you talk to them about? Well, simply tell them a story, and they will love you instantly.
Are you visiting a bed-ridden friend at the hospital and wanting to relax them a bit? Simply read their favourite to them and see them revive in no time. So, you see, you have plenty of reasons that a book offers you to be happy.

6. Better Writers

Yes, you learn to write after reading a sizeable number of books. This one is a personal favourite point, and I can tell you that you can improve your writing by being a better reader. Books introduce you to various writing styles, and it also opens up an entire world of possible inspiration for a better writing style. Either you could mimic your favourite writer’s style for yourself or develop one yourself. Be it deep like Salmaan Rushdie or breezy like Chetan Bhagat; pick your style, and you are good to go. After all, both of these writers have been on the bestseller’s list, despite their different writing styles (I might offend some people by mentioning them in the same sentence as well!).

7. A Source of Self-Improvement

The Self-help books are a rage. Be it ‘You can Win’ by Shiv Khera or ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari’ by Robin Sharma. These books are widely recommended for a reason. They not only touch people’s lives but also change them for the better. Self-help books offer people hope, insight, perspective, and an introduction to a new dimension. You could be dealing with issues in your personal space, and the right book could offer you the ‘key’ to a brand new horizon. Also, you get to understand the fact that you are not alone in your suffering. Some people have struggled and won the same battle as yours. So, you see, there is hope and happiness in here.

Why Reading Is Fun And Makes You Happy? - The Conclusion

Reading makes you happy in ways more than one. Keep in touch with ‘words’, and they will lead you the way. However, much like friends, be sure to ‘choose’ the right kind of books that inspire you and enhance you to be a better person. Whatever you do, be sure to continue reading and uplift your mood to a better height.
